The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, commonly known as the Interstate Highway System, is a network of controlled-access highways that forms part of the National Highway System in the United States. The system extends throughout the contiguous United States and has routes in Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. WebAll segments of the Interstate system have at least four lanes with two in each direction. Each side of the road is separated by a median of at least 50 feet in rural areas, and 10 feet with a concrete wall in urban areas. Each lane must be a minimum of 12 feet (3.7 m). The maximum allowable grade is 6%.
